Slowly, ever so slowly, this guitar is shaping up.
It is being built with some Ambrosia maple from BobC.
What makes the pattern is the Ambrosia beetle, who leaves little holes behind him as he burrows into the wood. The resultant stain makes it worthwhile to me, but the holes need some treatment. Outside, I'm just about settled on filling them with some black goo. Inside? I decided to cleat them, and ended up using some off-cuts of the Am. maple. So here's a view or two of the cleating efforts.

Thanks for looking,

Steve

This one is simply from a different angle, showing a bit more of the work.

Some are easier to spot than others.
How many can you find???

Wow Steve, that does look nice. What a distinctive looking guitar. Although I think I can pick yours and your brothers guitars at least out of a small crowd. They have a certain look to them, we'll call it the Kinnaird style, and that distinctive headstock doesn't hurt. I wish I had designed that headstock, I like it. I can't wait to see the rest of this guitar. How is the "East meets West collaberation guitar" coming along?John How38665.7349537037

Beautiful, Steve! I found 9...but I really had to look hard. Great job of masking...should be helpful when we start covering up the WFB cracks!

Also...let's see more pics!

Great job of matching bro
I don't see any. What patches are you talking about?
That sure is a pretty guitar interior.

Show off!

That's such cool wood. My local woodcraft had a couple hundred board feet of this stuff not too long ago. It had really amazing amounts of that figure. I bought none of it, even though the wood was nice and wide. <sigh>

Oh......I see 10 patches...

Steve I was wondering what happened to that guitar. It really looks cool. Can't wait to see it finsihed.

Hey thanks for the kind remarks, guys.
My brother got the correct answer!

No, actually, Russell and Don counted correctly.
But since Russell was first, he is the winnner!
The prize you ask, Russ?
It's not insubstantial. The first correct guess wins JJ's set of Waterfall Bubinga! I'll send along his email address so you can contact him with your shipping details.

Steve

P.S.--thanks mucho, JJ!!

John (How)-- The collaboration guitar is sort of stuck in some kind of time warp, unless my brother has gotten some work done on his part.

We need another brother or two to help spread around this work load!!

You could have left the beetle work and had a few more soundholes.

I've never seen ambrosia maple with that much red. Reminds me of box elder. It's very nice!

Ron, you are correct. At least that is my understanding, that this set is indeed Boxelder. It is very soft, and sort of "punky" like Poplar can be. But the coloration just got to me, and it was crying out to be made into a guitar. We'll see how it works....

Steve if that's box elder then what is the stuff I have with brown and blue streaks? I just thought it was a female ambrosia beetle hence pink trails and a male beetle hence brown and blue trails? Bobc38668.2832291667

Bob, I'm no entomologist, nor (I hope) a sexist, but your explanation sounds reasonable to me.

If the bug was gender neutral, what color would that produce?
